St. Patrick’s Day is coming up soon.  If your kids are like mine, as that day approaches, they start seeking out signs of little leprechauns creeping around our house.  Whether or not you’re Irish, it’s fun to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.  If you’ve never really done anything for this Irish holiday before, maybe this year will be the year you turn over a new leaf, and join in on spreading some cheer with your own version of the “Luck of the Irish.”  In case you need some ideas, here are a few you can use to entertain the kids as the day draws near.

Make a Leprechaun Trap

The kids will love making their own leprechaun trap for the house or yard.  They’ll enjoy it even more when they see that their leprechaun has paid his “fine” and left them some gold coins in exchange for being set free (play along…).  To make the trap, take green and black construction paper and create a St. Patrick’s Day leprechaun hat.  The hat should have a wide brim.  You can decorate it however you’d like, using your creativity and perhaps a few well-placed shamrocks. Make a top for your hat, but cut a little trap door in it for your leprechaun to fall through.  Using Legos, or even some sticks the kids gather from the yard, use hot glue to make a ladder leading to the top of the trap.  Leave your trap out overnight and in the morning, the kids can discover that their trap worked!  Inside you can place gold, foil-covered chocolate coins as a special treat.

Luck Of The Irish Treats

Food coloring is such a wonderful thing!  Thanks to food coloring, you can color anything green in celebration for St. Patrick’s Day.  If you’re feeling a little adventurous, why not make green cupcakes with your kids?  Just add some green food coloring to vanilla cupcake mix and cream cheese frosting. Another fun idea is making Rice Krispies treats. They are a fantastic sweet that kids go crazy for.

Treasure Hunt

All kids love a good treasure hunt.  Why not host one in your backyard?  Chances are, the weather will be getting warmer, so they won’t have to bundle up quite so much.  You can hide all kinds of inexpensive treasures around your yard for them to find.  When your treasure hunt is over, let them compare their finds to see who managed to gather the most treasure.  Remind them that whatever they miss, a leprechaun is sure to find!
