Rainy Day Bliss – It's Possible with a Kids Raincoat from Hartstrings

Seasons in the Northwest are a little different than anywhere else in the country. Really there’s just one season. We call it the rinse cycle. Rain is an ever-present element, be it: fall, winter, spring, or summer. Don’t get me wrong, it does warm up for a few days or weeks here and there, but one thing a mom should never be without is a kids raincoat.

Rain, Rain Go Away

In my house, it’s a constant battle to protect my kids from the elements. Why? Kids resist wearing anything they don’t feel like wearing. If mood isn’t a factor, forgetfulness is. It’s that simple.

I love my kids, but I have hit the point of picking my battles. In order to stop the full-scale wardrobe meltdowns, I had to find a kids raincoat they would voluntarily wear. This is no easy task. I can tell you from experience, when my oldest daughter turned 9, she started coordinating and accessorizing her outfits. By age 10, there were things she flat out refused to wear. Now, she shows me things that she likes and we talk about developing an age-appropriate wardrobe.

The Power of the Mommy Veto

For those of you who may not know it, the mommy veto is a concrete and immediate “no” to something. As a parent, there are times you need to stand your ground on a particular subject or issue. That’s what I use the mommy veto for. The key is to use it when it really counts. Clothing is a place where it counts, which is why I’m excited to tell other moms about what happened recently.

I was in my home office organizing some paperwork. My daughter walked in holding a piece of paper. In a quiet voice, she asked if we could go shopping this weekend. I gave her a knowing look and asked to see the piece of paper she was holding. To my surprise, it was a coupon to:

When I asked her about the website, she said it was a site her friends went to for clothes. Knowing better than to implicitly trust the fashion sense of pre-teens, I told her we’d check out the site together. Then something unexpected happened.

Hartstrings had attractive, contemporary fashions that fit my daughter’s age group. There was nothing immodest or suggestive. It was a welcomed change from some of the things she’s “just dying” to wear. I agreed that she could use the coupon to get a cute spring outfit she liked. When she was done shopping, I reviewed the purchase.

She could tell by the look on my face that something hadn’t passed muster. I told her I thought the outfit needed a little “something extra.” Several days later when the order arrived, she couldn’t help smiling. The first thing she pulled out of the box was a kids raincoat.

It goes with everything and she never fights about wearing it. There’s no if’s, and’s, or mommy veto’s about it.

Family Spring/Summer Activities That Make a Difference

Our family calendar tends to get pretty full with fun activities to do together during the spring and summer months. Even so, I’ve always felt it was necessary to schedule in some time to give back to our community too. While we love to bask in the summer sun and play for hours with the garden hose in the backyard, it’s important to remember how much our kids benefit from doing activities as a family that make a difference.

There are so many different types of activities you can do together that the kids will love. I like to incorporate doing great things for our environment and reaching out to the people within our community. That way, the kids get a well-rounded view of how much they can contribute. Perhaps you’ve never thought about giving back to your community together as a family. There are so many valuable lessons to be learned, and your kids will have a wonderful time learning them. Here are a few ideas to get you started this year.

Visit a Nursing Home

Elderly people love kids! My kids have always loved spending time with older people, so visiting a nursing home has always been one of our favorite community service activities. To prepare for your visit, you can bake some cookies to share with the residents, and you can also bring along some books for your kids to read to them. Remember, your kids might be a bit shy at first, so these things can act as ice breakers. I would advise dressing the kids up a little bit to remind them of the seriousness of their visit. Dressier clothes will help them remember to be on their best behavior. Hartstrings makes some really adorable blouses for kids, like the Poplin Blouse with Eyelet Ruffles. This blouse goes great with a skort such as our red Cotton Eyelet Skort. For your boys, our White Polo Shirt goes well with our Flat Front Chino Shorts for a look that’s casual but still a little dressy.

Plant A Tree

If you’ve never planted a tree, it’s definitely something you should start making a tradition for your family. You won’t need dressy blouses for kids for this activity. Invite everyone to dress as casually as they want to. Although if you decide to plant your tree early in the season, it might still be windy. In that case, the kids will need jackets, such as our Cotton Nylon Zip Front Jacket or one of our Mesh-Lined Hooded Windbreakers. Once you’re appropriately dressed, be sure to take the proper steps in planting your tree, including:

  • Getting permission to plant the tree
  • Choosing your tree carefully
  • Use proper tree-planting procedures to plant your tree
  • Plan to water your tree every week

Can you think of any other activities your kids would enjoy doing in your hometown? Whether you need blouses for kids, or casual attire, Hartstrings has everything you need to dress your kids for any activity. Check out our online shop today!

Baby Boy Clothes For All Of Your Summer Adventures

Summertime has always been a busy time of year for our family. In fact, sometimes it seems like every weekend is busy with some kind of trip. Whether we were going to Grandma and Grandpa’s house, taking a trip to the local swimming pool, or spending the afternoon in the park after a picnic lunch, we always made the best of the time we had to spend together as a family.

Although our summer weekends are still just as busy, when our boys were babies, that time was really precious. I have to admit that one of the things I liked the best about spring and summer was packing away all of those winter clothes in favor of some cool, summer outfits. At Hartstrings, we have some of the cutest baby boy clothes you’ve ever seen, at some of the best prices around. Here are just a few examples of outfits we have available for your little one to sport this summer.

Lazy Beach Days

Are you planning a day at the beach soon? Maybe your “beach” is just a sandbox in the backyard with a little kiddie swimming pool. Either way, your little guy will look and feel nice and cool in an Infant Embroidered Romper. Ours is made of 100% cotton to help him beat the heat, and with the convenient snaps underneath, dressing and diaper changes are a breeze.

If going swimming is a part of your plans, your baby boy will need some swimming trunks for his first season in the ocean, lake or pool. I happen to be a big fan of our Infant Floral Print Swim Trunks. They look like they came directly from Hawaii, with the large floral design. These swim trunks are made of microfiber, which means they’ll dry very quickly once your little guy is finished swimming.

Grandma’s and Grandpa’s House

If you’re like our family, you’ll be planning to spend time with Grandma and Grandpa this summer. You’ll need just the right baby boy clothes for them to “coo” over during your visits. I love our Infant Striped Polo shirt and Infant Flat Front Chino Shorts. These are perfect for showing off how cute your baby boy is, while providing him with the comfort he needs to play and get a little bit dirty in the backyard.

One last word about Grandma’s house…

Grandpa was always a bit of an adventurer, even when my little boys were just babies. If your kids have a Grandpa like ours, you’ll want to stock a few warmer items just in case he decides to take off on an adventure during a rainy day. Our Infant Zip Up Hoodie is exactly what you need to keep your little boy nice and warm.

What are your plans for this summer? Even if you’re not sure yet, and even if you’re planning on spending some time at home, be sure you have all of the baby boy clothes you’ll need. Visit our online store today to see our incredible selection!
